The
Magical Gifts
Every
one of the guests dressed in the most splendid of apparel. Even the poor
folks managed to be presentable. King Fulacian was the handsomest man who
elicited sublimity. His
brown hair was touched with silver at the temples, while a few fine lines
marked all the years of laughter at the corners of his twinkling eyes, but
his inner soul of youth shone out from every part of his being like that
of a brilliant candle lighting an entire universe. His thick, kind brows
greeted every guest, treating all with equality of goodness and respect,
holding no contempt for the meek and poor. From a distance, one's eyes
would instinctively rest upon his most prominent feature--his fine, high
nose, which did not have a look of arrogance, but of most nobility and
righteousness. His strong, gentle hands were clasped in warm handshakes
with all the eager guests who were lined up, each waiting patiently for
his or her turn. Then, great gasps of astonishment came from the crowd as
their eyes turned to Princess Sophia, who was descending the stairs with
grace. She made her way to her father with her violet dress of satin
trailing behind, accentuating her curvaceous figure. Of a
certainty, Princess Sophia was the most exotic flower of them all, adorned
with blinding jewels. Eyes of all colors were glued to her, following her
every step. Some even forgot to swallow their food, while others trailed
behind as loyal puppies. Ah, she was certainly a mystical sight!
Everyone was having a merry time. Many entertainers were doing
tricks and making enchanting music. The polished marble floors reflected
thousands of happy faces. Princess Sophia was sweeping away on the dance
floor with all the gentlemen who were lucky enough to steal her away from
other envious men. Laughter was heard everywhere, from the tallest tower
down to the villages. The twittering of birds added to the harmonious
sound of joy.
One young man by the name of Lord Veldolf teased his friend.
"You're making all the ladies look upon you with envy."
"Nonsense," Princess Sophia answered with a mischievous
grin.
"Wonder why Prince Lornox didn't come."
"He has an urgent matter to resolve."
"May I have this dance?" asked Lord Veldolf when they
were playing Princess Sophia's favorite music.
There were numerous tables laid out with delicious and tantalizing
food, from roasts gilded with gold leaf to exotic dishes such as stuffed
peacocks and swans. The fragrance of freshly picked wildflowers accented
the enjoyment.
During the fourth course of the feast, Princess Sophia asked that
her fortune to be read by Dawn. Everybody waited anxiously as Dawn began
with an air of mystery in her deep, booming voice.
"You shall live your first month of your seventeenth year well
and happy, but terror and adventure you shall face on your wedding
day."
Silence fell around the room.
When the startled princess finally found her voice, she asked,
"But what shall I do?"
The fortuneteller only bestowed two gifts upon her, explaining that
they would help her on the day of tragedy. The two presents were a
beautiful white dove and a multicolored ring of rhinestones.
