I
was born in
York
,
England
, in 1942, and subsequently emigrated to
Edmonton
in 1956 with my parents. I
went to Allendale Jr. High, Scona Comp, and Bonnie Doon (the year it
opened: 1958). It was there
that I met and dated Marie Harrison, and we married
in 1963. We have three
children, and three grandchildren.
I graduated as a chartered accountant in 1966, after
articling with the firm of Christenson, Morrison & Co., one of the
root firms of KPMG. I
then spent five years pursuing my profession in industry (petrochemicals,
aircraft maintenance/manufacturing) until 1971, then moved to
Westlock
,
Alberta
, driven by a strong desire to live in the country.
I am now the senior partner in a small firm of chartered
accountants (fifteen people), and now work part time for most of the year.
Retirement is getting very, very close, but I’m still going
through the weaning process.
Over the years I have been involved in community work,
including serving on the boards of the Westlock Cultural Arts Society, the
Westlock Library Board, the Westlock Scholarship Society, and the
Tawatinaw Valley Ski Club. I
have also been president of the Alberta Army Cadet League, the Westlock
Rotary Club, and the Westlock-Sturgeon P.C. Association.
Along the way, I spent 17 years in the Canadian Army
Reserve force, retiring ten years ago as a captain.
Other ‘life’ experience includes two years working in an
auto-body shop before becoming a CA, running a two hundred acre mixed
farming operation, owner/operator of a log mill for pre fab housing, and
chairman of a public (Vancouver Stock Exchange)
gold company. As well
as still practicing as a CA, I own and operate a hobby farm with a 60-cow
herd operation.
As to my literary career, it is quite limited.
I have won several contests over the years (a poetry contest, there
was a short story aired on CBC radio, an Edmonton Journal Humour award,
and a tie for first place in the now defunct ‘Alberta Search for
a Novelist Contest’, which happened, I believe, around 1981.)
And of course, there is now Jessica Jones and the Gates of
Penseron, which won the 2007 BookAdz
Award for Best Book, and Eboracvm, The Village.
A follow on to the latter, Eboracvm, The Fortress, will be
ready next summer.
I currently intend to devote my retirement to writing,
though this will of course depend (he said with tongue in cheek) on how
long I can afford to do so.
