A fast-paced
adventure between man, creature and the harsh elements of the Canadian
Tundra
The team changed directions and began running faster
despite their weariness. Terror enabled them to find strength. Though he
knew it was bad luck to look back during a storm, Iksik couldn't help
turning his head. He wanted to see what was chasing them.
At first he saw nothing but snow. Then the winds
shifted, and he could see a large shadow bounding toward them. It was
almost the outline of a bear that he glimpsed, but much larger. It even
seemed larger than a moose. Yes, the shoulders were much higher than
even a musk ox. What on the tundra could be larger than a musk ox?
The gap between them and the animal closed and Iksik
felt his limbs tingle. His body wanted to shut him away from his
terror by going to sleep, but he clamped his fingers to the sled and
bent low to scream into the wind. His knees weakened, for every joint
yearned to collapse to the numbness of fear.
"It's coming!" he cried out.
